Ah, the Renaissance Era. A time of creative and scientific rebirth, literally what the name means in French, that lasted from the 14th to 17th centuries. Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Shakespeare were creating works that would last for centuries and explorers such as Columbus, Marco Polo, and Ponce de Leon were traveling the world. So whether you have an interest in Renaissance history or the history of Halloween, there are costumes out there for you. Speaking of the Renaissance Era though, just be sure to avoid the Black Plague.
Knights of the past still inspire a sense of awe in today’s society, about on par with that of superheroes, if not a little under. Knights were expected to carry out the orders of their Lords and Kings, which was great if the person they were serving was an intelligent, kind, wise and sane leader. If the leader wasn’t? Eh, not so great, but it also depended on the character and personality of the knight and they could either mitigate the orders of a cruel leader while still performing their duty so the effects weren’t as severe or they could reflect the cruelty of the leader and make it worse for other people. Since knights are popular as costumes during Halloween, why not be a golden Renaissance knight, or a valorous female knight, or a sexy royal knight?

When people think of history, they also think about the notable people who became famous for either being a well-known king, queen, or even an inventor. King Henry the 8th was alive during the Renaissance. He had married six times, broke away from the Catholic church because he wasn’t allowed to divorce his first wife since they didn’t have any living sons, and became for his unpredictable, paranoid behavior. Since there is also an Anne Boleyn costume, you and your significant other can dress up as an historical married couple before it all went wrong. If going as a king and queen isn’t your style, how about a well-known painter/inventor by the name of Leonardo da Vinci?

If you aren’t too keen on dressing up as actual people, why not literary and fantasy characters from the same time period. It is hard to choose as there are just so many of them. People aren’t quite sure if King Arthur is just a literary character or if he actually existed, but why not go with the best known literary character of all time? He pulled a sword from the stone, hung out with a wizard and had a roundtable where he and his knights sat together where the roundness of the table signified that they were all equal to each other.
Speaking of wizards, why not? It will delight the children to see what looks like an actual wizard, apart from Santa Claus, wow the adults and you could even confuse people if you take the time to learn a few magic tricks beforehand. Ladies can even get in on the magic by dressing up and adding some enchantment to the evening. While Robin Hood might have existed in some fashion, he, or she, can exist once again on Halloween night, along with Maid Marion. If you happen to see any kings, make sure they don’t see Maid Marion, or you could always challenge them.

Since dragons are popular, why not be the queen of dragons for one night and rule over all dragons? Might help to bring a friend along who is willing to dress as a dragon, but you might find a couple of dragons on your way around town. Just be sure that they don’t cause trouble and burn down the only tavern in town.
Maybe you don’t have a fairy godmother, but that doesn’t mean you can’t dress up as one! Instead of finding a nice, quiet forest to sneak off to, you could always bring a little tree in a planter with you to spread the green wonders of nature. You could even bring along a little red wagon if you don’t feel like carrying a tiny tree in a pot, that way you can bring along even more of your little woodland plant friends.
Or maybe you’re the type of fairy who doesn’t want to follow the rules? A rebellious fairy would be more up your alley and cause havoc in everyone’s home and in public. There might be some rules you agree with, but there are others you feel are so out of date that you just have to go your own way.

Maybe being a person of the forest isn’t your thing and you would rather be at the bar serving drinks? No problem, you can dress up as your favorite Renaissance tavern owner and serve drinks to all your friends. You could really get into the spirit of things and throw a party while you’re at it. You might own the only tavern in the village, but you will be one of the most popular people in town.

Or, maybe being part of a partly lawful society isn’t what you want to do either. Grab the rebellious fairy and head out to the open seas because you are the swashbuckling woman of the year. That is if you don’t have a fear of open water and you aren’t prone to seasickness, can sail a ship and you can navigate your way around the world. It might also be helpful if you knew how to swim. Just watch out for mermaids, sirens and other nasty sea creatures ready to cause trouble.
